On Friday 17 April 2026 Valtos delivered the UK’s Highest DJ set bringing their unique ‘High Water Mark’ performance to the top of the Cairngorm Mountain Railway at 1,097 metres above sea level.
Though the Ptarmigan Top Station has played host to live performances in the past, this set took the venue to new heights bringing the landscape and sound together in a way rarely seen in the UK music scene. From arrival at the resort, travelling up on Scotland’s only Funicular, and enjoying spectacular panoramic views as the sun set over Glenmore and Strathspey, this was a mountain experience to remember.
Known for pushing boundaries in how traditional music is presented, this breakaway from Valtos‘ usual style saw Daniel Docherty, Martyn MacDonald, and fiddle player Euan McLaughlin combine to form the High Water Mark trio.
“Taking our ‘High Water Mark’ show to the top of Cairngorm Mountain was both the most unique, surreal, and fun event we think we’ve ever done (and we played Murrayfield 4 weeks ago). One of the best nights of our life and we will definitely be back”
Supported by fellow Isle of Skye natives, Kontrast, the group brought their distinctive mix of Gealic folk with an energetic, electronic influence, sampling the likes of Bicep, Mylo, and Peatbog Faeries. The performance coincided with the launch of their new record “The Last Light” featuring collaborations with the likes of Beluga Lagoon and Julie Fowlis.
Feedback from those who attended has been overwhelmingly positive, with one event goer stating “The fact that we were up almost on top of Cairn Gorm, the whole set up was perfect, smooth transition from Aviemore, the staff were amazing. Valtos were incredible! I saw them before in different venue and it wasn’t the same as up at the Ptarmigan. It’s was 100% better and so unforgettable!”.
The event stands as a defining moment for Cairngorm Mountain as we continue to diversify the resort and establish the Ptarmigan Top Station as a new, unique destination for the best of Scottish music, arts, and culture to be enjoyed in years to come.
