CairnGorm Mountain is home to Scotland’s only funicular railway

This is a unique visitor experience that allows people of all abilities to reach the Top Station where the Ptarmigan Restaurant is located with panoramic views from over 3,500ft. There is also a viewing terrace, exhibition, shop and the highest post box in the British Isles!

Opening Hours: The funicular train runs daily, on demand – the first train leaves at 10:00am and the last train up is 4:00pm. The last train down from the Top Station is currently at 4.30pm, but can change, so please keep an eye on our mountain updates!

Important Notes

  • All Funicular Railway tickets bought online should be collected from the Ticket Office
  • Children aged 5 and under travel for free.
  • Junior tickets are for those aged between 6 and 16. 
  • Extra child tickets are only available in conjunction with a family pass.
  • An annual pass allows visitors unlimited funicular travel for 12 months from purchase (cannot be used for snowsports).
  • Animals are not permitted to travel on the funicular other than guide dogs and hearing assistance dogs.

Managing the Mountain

In order to protect the plateau, when we are not open for snow-sports funicular passengers are NOT permitted to exit the top station building to go onto the mountain unless they are booked onto a guided walk. Access to our Mountain Shop, Exhibition, Restaurant/Bar and Viewing Terrace are available all year round.

How long does the journey take?

Outside of the snowsports season, the funicular journey takes 8 minutes each way.

Can I bring my dog?

We can only welcome guide dogs and hearing assistance dogs up on the Funicular. However, you can walk up with your dog and take the Funicular down once you purchase tickets from the Shop @ The Top.

What facilities are there at the top?

The Top Station is home to a fantastic array of facilities including;

  • The Ptarmigan Restaurant (the UK’s highest restaurant at over 3,500ft!)
  • An extensive viewing terrace where you can take in the whole of the Cairngorms National Park below!
  • The Shop @ Top, selling a wide range of souvenirs, homeware, gifts, toys, clothing and other treats.
  • The UK’s highest postbox
  • Mountain Exhibition, exploring the history of CairnGorm Mountain
  • Guided Walks Departure Point
Can I go for a walk at the top?

Do we need to book in advance?

Funicular Railway tickets can either be purchased in advance, online, or on the day via our Ticket Office, located at the Base Station. All Guided Walks must be booked online at least 48 hours in advance, however if you would like to enquire whether there is any late-availability on any of our Guided Walks, please call our Guest Services team via 01479 861261.
