Experience A Guided Walk To The Summit Of Britain’s 6th Highest Mountain
Have the chance to enjoy something truly special by walking to the summit of Cairn Gorm and enjoy breathtaking views from the 6th highest mountain in the British Isles.
A Unique Experience
Due to the conditions of our Visitor Management Plan, only those participating in guided activities can leave the Ptarmigan Top Station after travelling on the Mountain Railway.
This makes the Cairn Gorm Summit Walk a unique outdoor experience and a ‘must do’ for visitors to the Cairngorms National Park.
BOOKINGS OPENING SOON
Travel on the Mountain Railway to the Ptarmigan Top Station at a height of 1,097m (3,599 ft) above sea level. From here, you will be guided to the Cairn Gorm summit at a height of 1,245m (4,085 ft). You will hear stories of how the landscape was formed, learning of its vibrant history and the flora and fauna that are an integral part of its eco-system – a truly inspiring experience to see the true heart of the Cairngorms National Park.
“It’s an excellent experience for families, people who do not have the experience or fitness to walk from the base of a mountain to the summit and also for visitors who are short on time.”

Important Information
Cairn Gorm Summit Walks operate during the summer and autumn months, depending on ground and weather conditions. We can accommodate groups of a minimum of 2 and a maximum 10 people to ensure everyone has a great experience.
For further details, and to see which days Summit Walks are running, please refer to our Mountain Report.
Please note, this activity takes place in an exposed mountain environment and is highly weather dependent. It may be cancelled at short notice due to either poor conditions on the day, or due to extreme weather forecasts for safety reasons.
Please ensure you have read our terms and conditions before booking.
We will usually offer two walks per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You will meet your guide at 10:15AM for departure on the 10:30AM train for the morning walk, and 1:15PM for departure on the 1:30PM train for the afternoon walk.
We recommend allowing at at least 2 hours for the full experience.
How fit do I need to be?
The walk is at a gentle pace however, you will need a suitable level of fitness to be competent to walk for 90 minutes on uneven surfaces and at elevation. The walk takes place in a high mountain environment at a maximum elevation of 1,245 m (4,085 ft).
Is the walk suitable for children?
Due to the uneven foot paths the walk is not suitable for buggies (or wheelchairs). The walk is suitable for children aged 6 years and over (if they are capable of walking for 90 minutes) though toddlers are welcome in carriers.
What clothing do I need to wear?
Weather can change very quickly on a mountain environment. Walking boots or sturdy trainers with a good grip should be worn (wellies, sandals and gym shoes are not considered suitable footwear). We also recommend outdoor and warm clothing including a waterproof jacket. It is at the discretion of the guide whether you have suitable footwear and clothing. Please ensure you come fully prepared to avoid disappointment.
Is the walk suitable for disabled customers?
Whilst the Mountain Railway is suitable for disabled guests, unfortunately due to the uneven foot paths, the Cairn Gorm Summit Walk is not suitable.
Is there anything I need to bring?
Please ensure you bring refreshments and plenty of water to drink during the walk.
Where are the nearest toilet facilities?
There are toilets located in The Base Station (before you board the train) and toilets are also located at the Top Station (where you begin and end your walk).
