Cairn Gorm summit

CAIRN GORM SUMMIT

Using the Mountain Railway to reach The Top Station, you have the chance to enjoy something truly special by walking to the summit of Cairngorm in around 45 minutes.

Regular Summit Guided Walks can be booked online between May and October. Our guides will take small groups of a maximum of 10 people to ensure you have a great experience. Start your walk from The Top station at 1,097m above sea level and your expert guide will take you to over 1,244m on a 90-minute return walk back to The Top Station.

Enjoy breathtaking views from Cairn Gorm summit, Scotland’s 6th biggest mountain in the British Isles and cheat bagging a Munro in just 90 minutes. The walk, which is around two miles long, takes you on rough, uneven surfaces with a steady ascent therefore a level of fitness is required.

You will hear stories of how the landscape was formed, learning of its vibrant history and the flora and fauna that are an integral part of its eco-system. A truly inspiring experience to see the true heart of the Cairngorms National Park.

“It’s an excellent experience for families, people who do not have the experience or fitness to walk from the base of a mountain to the summit and also for visitors who are short on time.”

“There was no rush to reach the top and each of us strolled uphill, stopping at regular intervals to enjoy the ever more expansive views. Steve provided lots of interesting information about the mountain, including possible flora and fauna sightings, as well as pointing out many other surrounding peaks.” Read Fiona’s review here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be?

You will need some level of fitness to be competent to walk for 90 minutes on uneven surfaces. The walk is however at a gentle pace.

Is the walk suitable for children?

Due to the uneven foot paths the walk is not suitable for buggies (or wheelchairs). The walk is suitable for children aged 6 years and over (if they are capable of walking for 90 minutes) though toddlers are welcome in carriers.

What clothing do I need to wear?

Weather can change very quickly on a mountain environment. Walking boots or sturdy trainers with a good grip should be worn (wellies, sandals and gym shoes are not considered suitable footwear). We also recommend outdoor and warm clothing including a waterproof jacket. It is at the discretion of the guide whether you have suitable footwear and clothing. Please ensure you come fully prepared to avoid disappointment.

Is the walk suitable for disabled customers?

Whilst the Mountain Railway is suitable for disabled guests, unfortunately due to the uneven foot paths, the guided walk to the summit is not suitable.

Is there anything I need to bring?

Please ensure you bring refreshments and plenty of water to drink during the walk.

Where are the nearest toilet facilities?

There are toilets located in The Base Station (before you board the train) and toilets are also located at The Top Station (where you begin and end your walk).
