The 2km Funicular Railway runs a regular service taking visitors to the Ptarmigan Top Station in around 5 – 8 minutes. As you travel up the mountainside, you’ll get the chance to capture spectacular views of the Grampian Mountains, ancient Caledonian pine forests of Rothiemurchus Estate, and glistening Loch Morlich in the heart of Glenmore Forest Park.
At the Ptarmigan Top Station you will find the UK’s highest restaurant and Cairngorm Gin Bar, with panoramic views across Strathspey. The outdoor viewing terrace allows visitors to experience the mountain environment first hand. On the lower levels you will find the Shop at the Top, offering a wide range of gifts, clothing, and local products as well as the Cairngorm Learning Zone and immersive 270° “Cairngorm Story” exhibition.
“We visited the Cairngorm Mountain Railway and were thoroughly impressed with the whole experience, from the accessibility to the awe-inspiring scenery.
The Cairngorms are mountains with very special flora, fauna and geology that can be damaged easily. Due to the large numbers of people visiting the Ptarmigan Top Station, we operate a conservation plan to protect the fragile habitats, within and surrounding the ski area. This means Mountain Railway passengers are not permitted to leave the Ptarmigan building to go out on the mountain.
The Cairn Gorm Conservation Plan
Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd are dedicated to running the mountain sustainably and have signed up to a legal agreement not to permit users of the Mountain Railway access onto the sensitive mountain areas nearby. Please help us to protect our natural heritage by co-operating with our Visitor Management Plan and behaving responsibly.

Can I bring my dog?
In order to protect the plateau, and comply with our Visitor Management Plan, dogs are not permitted to travel from the Base Station to the Top Station on the Mountain Railway, with the exception of assistance dogs. This is due to there being no outdoor access from the Top Station when the closed system is in place outside of the snowsports season.
