Last month, Cairngorm Mountain had the pleasure of welcoming pupils from Aviemore Primary School to the resort for three adventurous days out.
The visiting classes, spanning P1, P2, and P3, travelled to Cairngorm Mountain aboard the “Aviemore Adventurer” — a Stagecoach bus service that runs regularly from the town centre. On arrival at the Base Station, the groups were greeted by members of the Cairngorm Mountain Ranger Service, some of whom had attended the school themselves.
The day’s activities began with a ride on the Mountain Railway — a first-time experience for many of the children. Upon arriving at the Ptarmigan Top Station, the pupils stepped out onto the terraces to take in panoramic views across Badenoch & Strathspey — and even managed to spot their school!
The rest of the morning was spent exploring the Top Station, playing with the interactive sandboxes in the Cairngorm Learning Zone, and learning about the Cairngorm Story through the immersive film show experience.
After enjoying packed lunches in the UK’s highest restaurant, it was time to head back down on the Funicular Railway for some outdoor fun. Pupils spent the afternoon at the Adventure Play area and Ball Runs, where each child was given a wooden ball to use while playing alongside Rhona the Reindeer, Fergus the Frog, and Hamish & Heather, the Mountain Hare twins. The experience was topped off with some Jumping Pillow action and rides down the ‘wee’ Tubing Slide — all supported by members of our Adventure Sports team.
Following the afternoon’s activities, the groups boarded the Adventurer bus and returned to Aviemore.
Reflecting on the experience, Sulekha Miller, PT at Aviemore Primary School said “Our pupils had an amazing time visiting Cairngorm Mountain! All of the staff were so friendly and accommodating at all the different areas. Everything went so smoothly, and we are so grateful that we were able to include all of our pupils, and all the different needs catered for so attentively. You have done a fantastic job coordinating the whole experience!”
At Cairngorm Mountain, we believe that learning begins with wonder — and there’s no better classroom than the landscape that surrounds us. It was a real privilege to welcome the pupils of Aviemore Primary School and help them explore the mountain on their doorstep. By offering these opportunities, we hope to spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture a lasting connection between young people and the natural world. Sharing this special place with the next generation is not just a privilege – it’s a responsibility we’re proud to uphold.
Following the success of these visits, our aim is to develop a programme of regular activities for children in the local area and beyond — ensuring we continue to share the magic of being in these mountains.
